Description
Crème Brûlée Toast is a luxurious take on the classic French dessert, transformed into a delightful breakfast dish with creamy custard and a caramelized sugar topping.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 thickly sliced loaf of French bread, about 1 inch
- 5 big eggs
- 1 cup half-and-half
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2/3 cup sugar plus more for topping
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, diced small
- Sugar for caramelizing
- Maple syrup for serving
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whip together the eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla, 2/3 cup of sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until it’s all smooth and blended.
- Generously butter a 9×13-inch baking dish, then lay out the slices of French bread in a single layer, overlapping them a bit if you need to.
- Evenly pour the custard over the bread. Make sure every slice gets coated and gently press down to help them soak it up.
- Wrap the dish tightly in plastic and pop it in the fridge overnight so the bread can soak up that custard.
- Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Take off the plastic wrap, dot the bread with butter, and sprinkle a layer of sugar on top.
- Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until it’s puffed up and golden brown. Let it cool for a bit before serving.
- After it cools a bit, sprinkle a layer of sugar on the baked top. Use a kitchen torch or broiler to caramelize it until it turns golden and crispy.
- Top with maple syrup and if you like, add some fresh fruit or whipped cream on top.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider using thick-cut brioche instead of French bread.
- Make sure to let the toast cool slightly before caramelizing the sugar to avoid burning.
- Enjoy with a side of fresh berry compote for added sweetness.
