Description

Crème Brûlée Toast is a luxurious take on the classic French dessert, transformed into a delightful breakfast dish with creamy custard and a caramelized sugar topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 thickly sliced loaf of French bread, about 1 inch
  • 5 big eggs
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2/3 cup sugar plus more for topping
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, diced small
  • Sugar for caramelizing
  • Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whip together the eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla, 2/3 cup of sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until it’s all smooth and blended.
  2. Generously butter a 9×13-inch baking dish, then lay out the slices of French bread in a single layer, overlapping them a bit if you need to.
  3. Evenly pour the custard over the bread. Make sure every slice gets coated and gently press down to help them soak it up.
  4. Wrap the dish tightly in plastic and pop it in the fridge overnight so the bread can soak up that custard.
  5. Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Take off the plastic wrap, dot the bread with butter, and sprinkle a layer of sugar on top.
  6. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until it’s puffed up and golden brown. Let it cool for a bit before serving.
  7. After it cools a bit, sprinkle a layer of sugar on the baked top. Use a kitchen torch or broiler to caramelize it until it turns golden and crispy.
  8. Top with maple syrup and if you like, add some fresh fruit or whipped cream on top.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider using thick-cut brioche instead of French bread.
  • Make sure to let the toast cool slightly before caramelizing the sugar to avoid burning.
  • Enjoy with a side of fresh berry compote for added sweetness.
